Every lasting structure starts on solid, well-drained ground. We provide building pad grading, gravel driveway work, brush clearing, yard leveling, and trenching across Central North Carolina.
We will come walk the property with you and put together a clear written estimate.
Whether you need a level pad for a detached shop or pavilion, a pothole-free gravel driveway, or a sloped backyard reshaped so water stops running toward your foundation, our crew handles the heavy earthwork in-house.

Cutting corners on dirt work shows up fast in North Carolina. Uncompacted fill settles beneath concrete slabs, flat driveways rut after the first thunderstorm, and poorly pitched yards send water straight into crawlspaces.
Key Cost Drivers: (1) Total square footage or linear footage of the work zone; (2) Volume of cut-and-fill soil or imported fill dirt and stone required; (3) Vegetation, roots, or stumps that must be cleared and hauled; (4) Machine access width; and (5) Companion drainage pipe or culvert installation.
Before pouring a concrete slab for a detached garage or workshop, setting posts for a timber pavilion, or framing a porch addition, the building pad must be stripped of soft organic topsoil down to firm load-bearing subsoil.
We cut the high side of the slope, bring in clean compactable fill or crush-and-run stone in controlled lifts, compact each lift thoroughly, and leave a slight perimeter apron sloped away from the pad so rainwater never undercuts the slab or footings.
Long residential and rural driveways in Sanford, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Louisburg, and Pittsboro take a beating from delivery trucks and heavy summer storms. Simply dumping loose gravel into existing potholes only holds until the next rain washes the stone back out.
We rip and scarify the packed ruts below pothole depth, re-shape a center crown so water sheds quickly into side ditches, compact a dense base of #57 or ABC crush-and-run aggregate, and dress the top surface cleanly.
Many homeowners in Central North Carolina own half-acre to five-acre lots where the back half of the property is choked with sweetgum saplings, privet, briars, and fallen limbs. We clear out unwanted brush and small trees while carefully protecting the mature oaks, pines, and hardwoods you want to keep.
Once the brush is cleared and root balls are grubbed out, we rough-grade the soil so you can mow, fence the perimeter, cut a walking trail to a creek bridge, or build an outdoor living space.
After new home construction, septic work, or pool and deck installation, yards are often left with heavy tire ruts, clay clods, and sunken trenches that twist ankles and scalp mower blades.
We grade out high ridges, fill low depressions, blend in screened topsoil where needed, and finish-rake the yard to a smooth, mowable contour ready for seed, straw, or sod.
Digging through Piedmont red clay and tree roots by hand is slow and uneven. We excavate straight, uniform-depth trenches for electrical sub-panels to detached shops, water lines to gardens or docks, and solid buried PVC downspout lines.
We also dig deep, clean-walled pier footings and continuous beam trenches for decks, porches, retaining walls, and timber bridges, ensuring every footing reaches firm undisturbed native soil.
When a backyard slopes toward the back of the house, rainwater sheets straight against foundation vents, crawlspace doors, and lower-level patio slabs. Over time, that runoff saturates the soil around your house footings and rots sill plates.
We re-grade the transition zone next to your home to establish positive fall away from the foundation, intercept hillside water with wide grassed swales, and armor steep ditch banks or under-deck slopes with filter fabric and washed river stone or granite rip-rap.
Across Sanford and Lee County, the sandy loam of Pinehurst and Moore County, and the dense red clay hills of Wake Forest, Raleigh, and Chatham County, soil conditions change from neighborhood to neighborhood.
When you hire Deck By Deck, you do not have to coordinate a separate grading contractor and wait weeks for a deck builder. We grade the slope, bury the drainage pipe, pour the footings, and build the structure with one accountable crew. Explore our companion services:
